Drill Depth Stop Generator

A 3D printable collar that slides onto any drill bit and stops it at a set depth, so every hole is the same.

The bit

Added to the bore. 0 grips by friction, a positive number slides, a negative number grips harder. Printed holes come out small, so 0 is usually snug.

The collar

Taller sits squarer on the bit; one to one and a half times the bit diameter is plenty. A 3 mm wall is strong.

Drilling a hole to a set depth by eye is guesswork, and shelf holes or pocket screws that go too deep break through the other side. A depth stop fixes it. This collar slides onto the bit, grips it, and stops against the surface when the hole is as deep as you set. Every hole comes out the same.

What each setting does

Bit diameter. The drill the collar rides on. Set it to your bit. The bore is sized so the flats of the printed ring clear the bit however the layers land.

Fit. How much is added to the bore. Printed holes come out a little small, so a bore drawn at the bit size usually grips by friction, which is what you want. Leave the fit at 0 to start. If the collar will not go on, add 0.1 mm; if it slips while drilling, take 0.1 mm off.

Height and wall. A taller collar sits squarer on the bit and is less likely to tip. One to one and a half times the bit diameter is plenty. A 3 mm wall is strong enough to grip without splitting.

Using it

Measure the depth you want from the tip of the bit, and slide the collar up until that much bit sticks out past it. Drill until the collar meets the surface. For a grip that never moves, put a small flat on the bit or drill and tap the wall for a grub screw.

Printing it

Print it standing up, bore vertical, no supports. 100% infill and 0.2 mm layers, in PETG if you have it, because it wears better than PLA where it grips the steel.

Before you download

The file is read back before the button turns on: every edge shared by exactly two triangles, every face pointing outward, a positive volume. If a setting cannot make a sound collar, the page says why.
